UPDATE: Governor Cuomo expands his Executive Order regarding eligibility criteria for tenants who can apply for the COVID Rent Relief Program.

The DHCR has re-opened the application process on their website for tenants through February 1, 2021.

If you think that some of your tenants may be eligible, you should urge them to apply. If approved, Owners are paid directly from the State for up to four months of rent.

The new eligibility criteria for all new applicants is as follows:

  • Must be a renter and have a primary residence in New York State;
  • Applicants must have lost income during the period of April 1, 2020 to July 31, 2020;
  • Before March 7, 2020, household income must have been at or below 80% of the Area Median Income, adjusted for household size; and
  • Households must be “rent burdened” during the months they are applying for assistance between April 1, 2020 to July 31, 2020.

DHCR may contact and request W-9 information from Owners to process payments directly to Owners.
